Marcus Bartelt, born in 1969 in Aachen, studied jazz saxophone at the Hilversum Conservatory in Holland with Ferdinand Povel and Herman Schoonderwaldt. At the same time he was a member of Germany's National Youth Jazz Orchestra (Bujazzo) under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer.

Based in Cologne since the mid 90s he established himself as one of the leading and most versatile saxophonists in Germany, more and more turning to the baritone as his main instrument.

He has played and recorded with, amomg others, all the German radio Big Bands,Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, Paul Kuhn Orchestra, Till Brönner, Georgie Fame, Shirley Bassey and various pop artists.

In addition to that he continues working with musicians from the Benelux such as the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Michel Herr and his nonet "Life Lines", Félix Simtaine (Ten-Tamarre) and Jean Warland (Sax Port).

As a leader he plays in clubs and at festivals regularily with a quintet that he co-leads with trumpet player Ralf Hesse. He is also co-leader of the Marcus Bartelt - Matthias Bergmann Quintet

He is also the founder of the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, the "house band" on Monday nights at Cologne's well known jazz venue Stadtgarten.
