Marc Demuth began his studies of electric and acoustic bass in the Conservatory of Luxembourg. He continued his studies of the electric bass with Michel Hatzigeorgiou as well as the doublebass with Jean-Louis Rassinfosse at the jazz department of the Royal Conservatory of Bruxelles. After obtaining a first prize degree in both instruments he studied the jazz-doublebass at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Hein van der Geyn and Frans van der Hoeven and, as a side-subject, classical bass with Roelof Meier. He finished his bachelor degree in 2004 and decided to do a master degree in Jazz-doublebass which he obtained in 2006. During those studies an ERASMUS exchange program made him go to Barcelona for a year and study with Mario Rossy and Horacio Fumero at ESMUC (Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya).
Marc won several prizes over the last years:
In July 1996 he won a scholarship for studying electric bass at the jazz-department of the famous Berklee College of Music while participating at their annual workshop in Perugia, Italy.
In 2001 he won a prize for the best soloist at the annual Rotary Jazz-competition in Wavre, Belgium.
In 2003 he won the second prize at the Leiden jazz-band competition in Holland with the Joachim Badenhorst trio.
In 2004 he won the first prize as well as the public prize at the prestigious Jazz competition in Avignon in 2004 with the Pascal Schumacher 4tet.
He was selected to represent Luxembourg in the prestigious European Jazz Youth Orchestra Big Band (EJYO) amongst conservatory students of whole Europe for participating in their Europe and Brazil tour in 2004 under the conduction of the Portuguese leader/ composer Pedro Moreira.
He played with the Marc Demuth 4tet feat. Sofia Ribeiro in the House of Luxembourg in New York in march 2005, representing his country for the francophonie festival of New York in 2005.
Since three years he works intensively with the Portuguese singer Sofia Ribeiro in different projects, amongst their duo voice/bass which released its first CD DANCA DA SOLIDAO in 2006. At the same time he works with Sofia by featuring her with his own 4tet with the Luxembourgish vibraphone player Pascal Schumacher, the Belgium clarinet player Joachim Badenhorst and the Belgium drummer Yves Peeters. The first record of the Marc Demuth 4tet, ORIK, was released December 2007 and presented in Portugal and Spain on a tour of the band in January 08.
Alongside his own projects he is also a member in the band conducted by the Luxembourgish singer/songwriter Sascha Ley, a band which recently presented its debut album TRAVELLING LIGHT in many clubs and festivals in Europe as well as in India in November 2007 by performing in NEW DELHI, BOMBAY and PANJIM, GOA.
Besides those activities he is a very active and busy sideman in many different projects and in his recent years he was sharing the stage with many jazz-greats like Michael Brecker, Kenny Werner, Erwin Vann, Hein van de Geyn, Florian Weber,Jef Neve, John Ruocco, Guy Cabay, Jacques Pirroton, Phil Abraham, Felix Simtaine and many more.
Marc is recently the head of the Jazz department of the music school of Echternach and teaches acoustic bass, electric bass as well as Jazz-combo.
