In the space between expectation and surprise, you will find De Beren Gieren, providing robust evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass and drums. Based on the compositions of Fulco Ottervanger, the young trio seeks for music and for each other. This is the key to their music; the challenge of using the power of improvisation on the quest for a new form.

Since their creation in 2009, "De Beren Gieren have been pursuing a vocabulary they can call their own, and it's bearing fruit. The group has a restless dynamic, moving from flowery romanticism to fractured pointillism as the mood dictates, often taking in some groovy urgency or old school stride along the way. It's a genuine hybrid that never sounds contrived. Quite the opposite, they project a sense of enjoying their musical work that is infectious."

In 2012 they released their debut-cd wirklich Welt so and were offered a residency at the Vooruit in Ghent. Their second album a raveling saw daylight in the autumn of 2013.

The future of this band starts slowly to unfold and takes form step by step into the international circuit. In 2011 they travelled to Bologna to represent hometown Ghent Unesco Creative City of Music and their performances at renowned international showcase festivals like 12 Points(2012) and Jazzahead! Bremen(2013) were both enthousiastically received. In September they received the first prize at the Jazz Hoeliaart contest, alongside two other prizes.

De Beren Gieren also engage in collaborations with internationally renowned musicians, like Jan Klare, Jean-Yves Evrard and Hasse Poulsen. In 2012 they climbed the stage with clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst and cellist Ernst Reijseger, followed by a concert in December of that same year with clarinetist Louis Sclavis.

This year 2015 they are touring around Europe with Portuguese trumpet player Susana Santos Silva to present their album “A Detour Fish” released on Cleanfeed records.

The trio is also working on new repertoire “One Mirrors Many”, bringing self-made and analog electronic material to their sound. A release is planned for September 2015.

Their hard-to-pronounce name starts to ring a bell amongst music lovers from all over Europe. What might come in the future of these young talents it is only to be seen.
